Upcoming Events As part of their "Project Outreach," the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the highest military appellate court, will visit the University of Montana Law School April 7-8, 2008. In addition to a panel question and answer session, the Court will hear appellate oral arguments for the rape case: U.S. v. Bright. Current MLS President Charlie Cromwell will be submitting a brief as amicus curiae, and then present a 10-minute oral argument before the court on April 8th. Symposium - 13 Apr 2007 - 14 Apr 2007: The Student Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, the International Law Society, and the Military Law Society at The University of Montana School of Law co-hosted a symposium entitled "Civil Rights and the War on Terror."
My Life as a Air National Guard JAG - Tue. 13 Mar 2006, Noon, Castles Room 19. We were joined by Lewiston City Attorney/Petroleum County Attorney Monte Boettger, who is also a LtCol in the Montana Air National Guard. Monte served as a prosecutor and assistant with the Central Criminal Court of Iraq (CCI) in Baghdad, Iraq, in the summer of 2006. Monte gave an excellent presentation that included pictures and explanations of the workings of the court, day-to-day living in a combat zone, and wonderful reflection on the daily sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform.
My Life as a Marine Corps JAG - Tue. 06 Mar 2006, Noon, Castles Room 19.We were joined by former U.S. Marine Corps JAG and current Assistant U.S. Attorney (Great Falls) Rick Hosley for a noon lecture/Q&A session. Rick discussed his experiences as both a prosecutor and defense counsel for Marines in Okinawa, and also shared several operations/deployment law "war stories" concerning his deployment in support of a Marine Infantry Battalion in the Anbar Province of Iraq.
My Life as an Army JAG / Clerk of Court, U.S. Supreme Court - Tue. 06 Feb 2006, Noon, Castles Room 19.We were joined by Major General(ret.) William K Suter, the 19th and current Clerk of the United States Supreme Court, for a video teleconference that covered a variety of topics, to include Major General Suter's love of basketball and time spent in Army boot camp with Elvis Presley. Major General Suter is retired from the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam war. He also served as assistant Judge Advocate General of the Army, Chief Judge for the U.S. Army Court of Military Review, and Commander of the U.S. Army Legal Services Agency. Major General Suter obtained a B.A. from Trinity University and his law degree (LL.B.) from Tulane University. His current duties as Clerk of Court include managing the Court's docket and calendar and overseeing the Supreme Court Bar. He attends all oral arguments at the Court. .
Challenging "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" - Tue. 14 Nov 2006, 7 PM, Castles Center. [Click HERE to view the video!] We were joined by Major Margaret Witt, discharged after 19 years of active and reserve military service, and her ACLU attorney, Mr. Jim Lobsenz for a very moving evening looking at the personal and legal aspects of the Department of Defense's ban on gay and lesbian service members. Major Witt's case is currently on appeal to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. This event was co-hosted with the Student Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
How to Try A Case in A Combat Zone - Fri. 27 Oct 2006, Noon, Rm. 202. [Click HERE to view the video!] We were joined by School of Law alum David P. Sheldon, who recently traveled to Iraq to represent one of his clients, for a powerful talk on a variety of topics. David Sheldon began his 15-year career as a military defense lawyer in the U.S. Navy, where he spent four years representing officers and enlisted members before the U.S. Navy-Marine Corps Court of Military Review, the Court of Military Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He launched his civilian career in 1994, earning a national reputation as an expert in military defense. Today he frequently provides comments and analysis on high-profile military cases for CNN, NBC, CBS, and ABC television news and National Public Radio. Mr. Sheldon represents members of every branch of the armed services and the commissioned corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. He is a graduate of the University of Montana and its School of Law, '90. This event was co-hosted with the Montana Law Review.
