Welcome to BLG

Blackfoot Language Group (BLG) is a linguist group at the University of Montana. Our goal is to produce Blackfoot language materials for Blackfoot linguistics research and language teaching.

The Blackfoot language

Blackfoot is spoken in Alberta, Canada and Montana, US. The Blackfoot confederacy consists of four subgroups: Siksika (Blackfoot), Kainai (Blood), Apatohtsi Piikani (North Piegan) and Amsspaapii Pikani (South Piegan). The first three are located in Alberta and the last is in Montana.

The Blackfoot language is at the critical stage of language endangerment. We strive to create materials that increase knowledge in Blackfoot linguistics and educate young generations about their heritage language.

We hope to contribute to any aspect of language revitalization.

UM Linguistics

BLG is located at the Linguistics Laboratory, in the Linguistics Program, at the University of Montana.
