MA in General Linguistics
Course Requirements
I. The following courses are required:
- Ling 471 Phonology and Morphology
- Ling 472 Generative Syntax and Semantics
- Ling 474 Language History, Variety, and Change
- Ling 475 Linguistic Field Methods
- Ling 484 North American Indian Linguistics
OR
- Ling 489 Languages of the World
- Three 500-level seminars in Linguistics
II. Under the THESIS option, students may apply no more than 6 thesis credits
toward the degree, and the remaining 30 credits will be satisfied as follows:
- (6 thesis credits)
- 15 required 400-level courses (see I above)
- 9 required 500-level credits
- 6 elective 500-level credits
III. Under the NON-THESIS option, students may satisfy 36 credits as follows:
- 15 required 400-level courses (see I above)
- 9 required 500-level seminar credits
- 3 elective 400-level or 500-level credits
- 9 elective 500-level credits
ESL Teaching Assistants are required to take Ling 575 Preceptorship (R4),
which does not carry degree credit.
MA in Applied Linguistics
Course Requirements
I. The following courses are required:
- Ling 471 Phonology and Morphology
- Ling 472 Generative Syntax and Semantics
- Ling 466 Pedagogical Grammar
- Ling 478 Second Language Acquisition
OR
- Ling 477 Bilingualism
- Ling 480 Teaching English as a Foreign Language
- Three 500-level seminars in Linguistics
