*ESL Teaching Assistants are required to take Ling 575 Preceptorship (R4), which does not carry degree credit.

 

After Graduation, our alumni have accepted to various PhD programs (U of Arizona, U of British Columbia, U of California Santa Barbara, U of Hawai'i, Rutgers University).

Other alumni obtained language teaching jobs at various countries (Japan, Korea, Vietnam, etc.)

Linguistics in Undergraduate Study

Undergraduate students may select Linguistics Option in three majors: Anthropology, English and Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures.

MCLL (Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures)

For a degree in anthropology with an option in linguistics, the student must meet all the general Anthropology requirements and complete an additional 12 credits from the following:

Two options: General Linguistics & Teaching ESL

General (27 credits):
LING 470, 471, 472, 473, 474 and 476; LING 489; two courses from 475, 477 or 478.

Teaching ESL (28 credits):
LING 465, 466, 470, 471, 472, one course from LING 473, 475 or 476; LING 477 or 478; LING 480, 481 and 491, and one upper-division LING elective.

French Linguistics Option:
Within the French major it is possible to elect an option in linguistics.

1. Language courses 101 to 202 or equivalent in French.
2. The available language courses numbered 401 or approved equivalent.
3. Eighteen credits of Linguistics, including: LING 270 or 470, 471, 473S.
4. Strongly recommended are: nine upper division credits in literature and/or culture, and at least one course in the history of Europe.

ESL Certificate

Certificate of Accomplishment in English as a Second Language Teaching:
The Linguistics Program offers a Certificate that can be earned by undergraduate and graduate students while they complete requirements for degrees in other disciplines.

In order to earn the Certificate students must hold (or simultaneously earn) a bachelor's degree, and complete the following courses:

Required:

LING 470; LING 471; LING 472; LING 477 or 478; LING 480; LING 491 (3 credits for students with a teaching major, 1 credit otherwise)

Two from the following:
LING 466, LING 473 , LING 476, LING 481, LING 489

 

Also two years of a foreign language or its equivalent is required.
Non-native speakers of English may have to take an English competency examination.

 

Students completing a basic teacher education program with a teaching major will be certified to teach ESL in K-12 in Montana and elsewhere. The curriculum outlined on page 201 of the current catalog constitutes a minor teaching field.
