I am a linguist who cares about language speakers. There are about 6000 (estimated) languages currently spoken in the world and more than half of them are considered endangered or moribund. These languages are contributing to linguistic research, though they are rapidly disappearing. As a linguist, I would like to do research that leads to language maintenance and revitalization.
I think I have been a linguist since I was a child. As an elementary school student, I used to wonder why
Japanese Kanji characters are read in more than one way, why people in different areas in the country speak differently, and why I need to speak differently in school and at home.
