 SUSI 2012

Each summer, the Mansfield Center of The University of Montana hosts a project of the U.S. Department of State:  The Study of the U.S. Institute on Global Environmental Issues for 20 undergraduate students from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Burma, and Thailand.  The program is led by Dr. Len Broberg, chair of the environmental studies department, and managed by the Mansfield Center.  We invite you to apply to become part of this exciting program to develop your leadership skills, enhance your understanding of cross-cultural relations, develop a network with students across the world, and enjoy fun activities like white water rafting that help the students understand our part of the world.

If you are selected for this program, you would:

∙ Join in orientation activities. This would include a half-day raft trip, a barbecue, a baseball game, a Big Dipper ice cream party, and other social activities. You might also include the students in your Fourth of July activities or attend the Salish Kootenai Pow Wow.

∙ Participate in leadership development activities, such as the Ropes Course at McCormick Park and a cross-cultural negotiation simulation.

∙ Show the students what you love about Missoula – take them on a hike, to the farmer’s market, to hang out with your friends.

Your time commitment to the program is what you make of it.  For the basic level, you would be involved for about 20 hours over the month of July, with much of that time taking place their first week in Missoula, July 1-7.  Please note that this is an unpaid opportunity.
