“More Americans than ever are waking up to the possibility that Chinese is the language of the future.”
Los Angeles Times (02/01/2008)
Most Chinese people under the age of 20 can carry on a conversation with an American because English is required in the schools throughout China. Very few young Americans can speak Chinese because it has not even been offered in most schools in the United States. In Montana, that is about to change.
In the fall of 2009, it will be possible for Montana students in selected high schools, to begin the study of Mandarin Chinese, the most widely spoken language in the world.
The course will be delivered electronically from The University of Montana with the option of dual high school-college credit at 1/3 the in-state cost. That will be about $275.00 for 5 UM credits, transferable throughout the Montana University System. Lessons will be accessible at any time by any computer with an internet connection. The on-line instruction will be provided by two Chinese scholars certified to teach in Montana, supplemented by on-site direct mentoring of students by a local Chinese speaker at a regular scheduled time and classroom.
Students enrolled in the Mandarin course will also receive instruction in Chinese culture and history, with periodic visits by UM faculty and graduate students. Books and related educational materials will be provided to enrolled students, free of charge by UM’s Confucius Institute.
The University of Montana has recommended that classes be limited to approximately 20 students, so if you are interested in this first-time in Montana opportunity, communicate your interest to the guidance office right away.
