"The China Hands Legacy"
This inaugural Mansfield Center Conference embraced the Center's initial mission, which included both Asian affairs and ethics in public affairs. The 1984 China Hands Conference addressed the personal and professional suffering endured by American foreign service officers and journalists during and after World War II in China. The Conference exemplified the participants' personal stories as the inherent dilemma that is posed when an individual is caught between the policy of his government and what he considers the empirical truth.

"The Japanese-United States Relationship"
This Mansfield Center Conference addressed the Japanese-American relationship, specifically touching on questions of future challenges and opportunities for both nations, which, in Senator Mansfield's words, constitute "the most important relationship in the world."
