CHINA Town Hall:

Local Connections, National Reflections, Featuring Ambassador Gary Locke by Webcast and Commentary by Terry Weidner and Steven Levine.

Monday, October 29, 6:00 pm in 210 Todd Building, UM.

US Ambassador to Beijing Gary Locke will speak in a webcast to selected sites nationwide, followed by commentary by Mansfield Senior Fellow in Asian Affairs Terry Weidner and Research Faculty Associate Steven I. Levine.  This event is co-sponsored by the Mansfield Center, the UM School of Extended & Lifelong Learning and the National Committee on United States-China Relations.

China In Missoula

Join the Mansfield Center as we celebrate China in Missoula with these exciting events from Mao to conflict to diplomacy.

China and US-China Relations. Wednesday, September 26 at 7:00 pm in the UC Theater at UM: Professor Time Bradstock will discuss the contrast between China today and in the late 1970s, when he was an exchange student there; Mr. Sisu Pan will discuss energy as an aspect of Sino-US conflict and potential cooperation; and Mansfield Senior Fellow in Asian Affairs Terry Weidner will tie their themes together by discussing the domestic forces driving China today and how they affect US-China relations.

U.S. - Korea Relations in a Time of Transition

Join the Mansfield Center as visiting dignitaries discuss the relationship between the U.S. and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the aftermath of a free trade agreement and a missile launch by North Korea underscoring the precarious nature of the Korean security situation. Featuring Deputy Chief of Mission Ambassador Hwang Joon-Kook of the ROK’s Embassy to the U.S. and Dr. Abraham Kim of the Korea Economic Institute of America. Septmeber 18 at 3 pm in UM’s Turner Hall.

Mansfield Center HostsState Department Institute on Global Environmental Issues

The Mansfield Center hosted 19 student leaders from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Indonesia this summer on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. The program, the Study of the U.S. Institute for Global Environmental Issues, provides a comprehensive look at environmental issues in Montana and provides the opportunity for cultural exchange with citizens across western Montana. UM Center Names First Mansfield Fellow In International Affairs

The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center at The University of Montana has appointed its first Mansfield Fellow in International Affairs.

Kimberly Maynard is an internationally recognized consultant, teacher and researcher on problems of international development, humanitarian and emergency relief assistance, and national transitions from situations of violent conflict to stability and peace. Controversial Chinese Novelist Yu Hua

Yu Hua has become acclaimed in the West, but perturbed many of China’s leaders in the process, gaining fame for his probing depictions of Chinese society and culture. "Negotiating with Terrorists"

On Wednesday, October 26, Melissa Payson will speak in the University Center Theater on "Negotiating With Terrorists? -- A First-Hand Account of Discussions With Tribal Leaders in North Waziristan". An international development expert, Ms. Payson will talk about her work with local political and religious leaders on the Afghan-Pakistani border in a region U.S. officials call the current epicenter of global terrorism. The lecture begins at 7:00 PM in the U.C Theater and is free of charge.
