Thanks to the generous donation by Mr. and Mrs. David Chan, Peking University's School of International Studies (SIS) is happy to announce the establishment of Lixian Visiting Scholar Fund , which is to be effective from the autumn term of 2006.
SIS welcomes visits by scholars from universities, research institutes, and agencies outside of the Chinese Mainland who would like to interact with its faculty and students and gain access to its resources for research, including its library and Peking University Library. Visitors will enrich the intellectual community at SIS and develop professional relationships with the School that continue long beyond their time in residence. Visitors typically stay for a period between four and six months.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must hold a PhD degree and be no more than 50 years of age at the application deadline.
APPLICATIONS
All prospective Visiting Scholars are required to submit applications in order to be considered for acceptance to the program.
The application consists of three documents: (1) a letter from the applicant describing the applicant's area of research/study, the proposed purpose of the visit to SIS, expected arrival and departure dates; (2) an up-to-date curriculum vita; and (3) two letters of recommendation from the applicant's references.
Applications should be submitted electronically to the administrative coordinators of the Visiting Scholars Program, Dr. FAN Shiming ( fansm@pku.edu.cn ) and Miss TIAN Tian ( galahad1205@163.com ). For the applicants who want to spend the autumn term at Peking University , which begins in early September, the application deadline is March 15. For those who prefer to stay for the spring term, which usually starts in late February, the application deadline is September 15.
ACADEMIC WORK AND CONDITIONS
The Visiting Scholar will be staying on or near the campus of Peking University and be integrated into the School's academic programs. Each of them is expected to hold at least one talk at the School during the visit, and to submit a research paper in either Chinese (around 5,000 characters) or English (around 2,500 words) toward the end of the visit.
SIS will make it possible for the visiting scholars to enter the People's Republic of China. It will provide the scholars with office space and facilities like telephone, computer, and Internet access. Each visiting scholar will have a research assistant (usually a graduate student of SIS). Upon request, SIS should be responsible for helping the visiting scholars establish contact with other Chinese academic institutions and interview government officials.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
SIS will provide a monthly stipend of RMB ? 16,000 (currently equivalent to US$2,000), as well as a roundtrip air ticket (economy class) from the scholar's residence to Beijing .
ACCEPTANCE
After the applications are received, opinions are sought on the applicants' research plans from specialists at SIS and elsewhere. Finally, the choice of the Visiting Scholar is made by a faculty committee composed of professors of the main fields in international studies at SIS. At the initial stage, priorities will be given to those candidates who are interested in doing research on international energy security, economic cooperation and regionalism in Northeast Asia, and Hong Kong 's political standing under Chinese sovereignty.
SIS will send out the decision letter no later than April 15 for receiving the Visiting Scholar for the autumn term, or October 15 for the spring term. (Because of the delay in launching this program, the deadline for the autumn term of 2006 is June 30, 2006)
The individuals accepted into the program are required to complete a Visiting Scholar Enrollment Form, which will be included with the decision letter.
