The University of Montana

Position: Lecturer, 9-month, non-tenure-track, budget funded. Annually renewable appointment contingent on performance. Begins Fall 2011.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Requirements: Master's or Ph.D. degree with a demonstrated interest in Mathematics Education and a commitment to excellence in teaching college mathematics students, including mathematics for prospective elementary school teachers. Letters of recommendation should address mathematical ability, interest in teacher preparation, and prior involvement in the development or revision of mathematics courses. Proficiency in English is required.

Responsibilities: The primary responsibility will be teaching and coordinating mathematics education courses. A successful candidate must be able to assume a leadership role in teaching, development, review, assessment, and revision of other undergraduate mathematics courses. These responsibilities involve choosing textbooks, writing syllabi, and exploring teaching strategies that efficiently serve students. Performance of duties associated with the lower-division courses assigned will be the major component of this faculty member's annual evaluation. Willingness and ability to develop and teach online courses is a plus.

University: The University of Montana has a student body of approximately 14,000 students, 85 percent of whom are undergraduates. Nearly 25 percent of the students are from out-of-state or from foreign countries. The university consists of various colleges and professional schools.

Department: The Department of Mathematical Sciences currently has 21 tenure-track faculty members and three lecturers. There are about 100 undergraduate mathematics majors, and about 25 graduate students working on master’s and doctoral degrees in the mathematical sciences. Current departmental interests are in Algebra, Analysis, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Mathematics Education, and Statistics.

Location: The University of Montana is located in Missoula, a city in western Montana with a community of about 80,000 people. Set in a river valley in the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 3,200 feet, Missoula enjoys a moderate climate. Abundant recreational opportunities in surrounding state and national forests and nearby Glacier National Park complement a thriving intellectual atmosphere.
