Marina Goldovskaya with UM Russian Students

Marina Goldovskaya, who teaches at UCLA, visited UM in May of 2006. Prior to her visit were screenings of her films Solovki Power and The House on Arbat Street. During her visit was a screening of The Prince is Back followed by a discussion of the film with the director. Marina also visited a first-year Russian language class and the Documentary Unit in the School of Journalism. She also gave an interview with Brian Kahn from Home Ground, which was aired on public radio in June. This visit was made possible by: a grant from the Office of the Provost; as well as support from the Law Firm of Garlington, Lohn, and Roberts; and from the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures; and from the Department of Radio, TV, and Film.

The Russian Section has been participating for three years in the Annual ACTR National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest.  In 2006, there were 650 essays submitted from 52 universities and colleges.  Each essay was ranked by three judges in Russia . This year Matthew Weaver, a first-year student, was a third-place winner. In 2005 another first-year student, Jeffrey Erickson, won an honorable mention.
