What are the DELEs?

The DELEs ( Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera ), issued by Spain 's Ministry of Education, offer official accreditation of mastery of the Spanish language for citizens of countries in which Spanish is not the official language. The examinations, offered at three levels, test your ability to read, write, speak and understand Spanish.

Certificado Inicial
( Intermediate level)
Certifies sufficient proficiency to cope with a range of situations requiring elementary use of the language.

Diploma Básico
( High intermediate)
Certifies sufficient proficiency to communicate in everyday situations in which specialized usage is not required.

Diploma Superior
( Advanced level)
Certifies sufficient proficiency to communicate in situations requiring advanced use of Spanish and understanding of Spanish culture.

What is the DELE exam?

The examination for obtaining the DELEs ( Inicial, Básico, and Superior) consists of five sections.
- reading comprehension
- written expression
- listening comprehension
- grammar and vocabulary
- oral expression

A grade of “no apto” (unsatisfactory) on any one of the sections constitutes failure of the entire exam. All five sections must be retaken at a future date.

Who recognizes the DELEs?

Over 20,000 people have taken the DELE exams in fifty countries and one hundred fifty cities throughout the world. The diplomas are recognized by official institutions of Spanish-speaking countries and, increasingly, by corporations, chambers of commerce, and educational institutions in the United States .

Several American universities award course credit for the diplomas or require them of Spanish majors.

Who may take the DELE exams?

Applicants must provide proof of citizenship in a country in which Spanish is not the official language (anyone with a United States passport is eligible).

Applicants for the Diploma Superior must be sixteen years of age or older. There is no minimum age requirement for the Certificado Inicial or the Diploma Básico.
