Graduate Program Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures University of Montana Masters Degree in Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures: Spanish UM Graduate School Program of Study The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures invites you to study toward the M.A. degree in Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures: Spanish. The goal of the M.A. program is to prepare students with a broad background in Hispanic language and literature, leading to careers in teaching or further advanced study at the doctoral level. The M.A. program in Foreign Languages at The University of Montana is intimate and growing. Our graduate program is based on an ample curriculum leading to specialization in Spanish-American literatures and/or Peninsular literature as well as Hispanic linguistics. Throughout, students maintain a close contact with the director of graduate studies and have easy access to their various professors. Special features of the Spanish Section include a diverse, highly qualified, dynamic, widely traveled faculty who are actively engaged in research and extremely committed to their students. The program is designed so that the student may combine his/her interest with other disciplines (English, philosophy, women's studies, history, political science, anthropology, etc.) The Spanish faculty regularly invites distinguished scholars and major creative writers, including individuals such as Raymond Williams, Neil Larsen, Ken Brown, Ana María Shua, and Rosamaría Roffiel. Missoula, MT, located in southwestern Montana, is a beautiful college town nestled in the Rockies. The University of Montana has an enrollment of 12,500. The University's performing arts, sports, and other events along with a lively community and the surrounding countryside make a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities available. Applicants for assistantships are considered on the basis of knowledge and skills in the language area as well as scholarship and potential to undertake advanced study and research. Teaching assistants are responsible for a first-year language class. In addition to a wage, teaching assistants receive a waiver of the tuition fee (out-of-state or in-state) and the registration fee. Other fees charged by the University are not included in the TA fee waiver package. Teaching assistants are required to register for nine credits that apply to their M.A. program each semester. Research Facilities: The Mansfield Library with holdings of over a million volumes houses a balanced collection pertaining to Spanish and Spanish-American literatures and linguistics. In addition, facilities for computer-assisted research are available.
