In the Fall of 1998 Rick helped initiate the integration of digital technology and the arts when he developed and taught the original version of the MAR111A Integrated Digital Art course. A year later he developed and taught the first motion design course in the School of Fine Arts and in 2000 developed the first web design course in the School. Rick was named Chair of Media Arts when it became a Department in 2006 and served as Director of the School of Media Arts through 2012. Over the years he has collaborated on a variety of projects with faculty and students from Computer Science, Theatre, Dance, Forestry, Biology, and HHP.

Currently he heads the online BA program and teaches in the Digital Arts & Technologies area. He is also the Director of the Innovation Studio, which is housed in the School of Extended and Lifelong Learning. His creative output includes music and sound design compositions for movie and theatre productions, directing and editing credit for short documentary projects and a variety of internet/web media projects. His current research focuses on online education and the creative application of digital technology.
