Rembandt Harmenszoon van Rijn The Persian, etching, 1632, 105 x 72mm This etching by Rembrandt is one of the gems of MMAC's Permanent Collection. It serves as a prime example of Rembrandt's inventive approach to etching. Widely acknowledged as a master of this printmaking medium, he combined both traditional etching and drypoint techniques in a manner that preserved spontaneity while capturing meticulous detail. Rembrandt's etchings were prized by 17th Century connoisseurs. This particular print was created early in Rembrandt's career, during a prosperous period of his life. Over the course of his lifetime, Rembrandt produced hundreds of impressions from approximately 290 plates. 79 of these plates are still in existence today, a few of which are still in fine condition.
