Paolo del Signoraccio (called Fra Paolino da Pistoia, Italian 1490-1547), Portrait of a Saint (Saint Francis?), oil on board, ca. 1517-1547 |
Paolo del Signoraccio (called Fra Paolino da Pistoia, Italian 1490-1547), Portrait of a Saint (Saint Francis?), oil on board, ca. 1517-1547 Fra Paolino created his first painting, a Crucifixion fresco, in 1516. By the late 1520s, he was painting altarpieces in Pistoia, Italy. Although Fra Paolino was a Dominican monk, he often painted Saints of other religious orders. The Saint in this work is very likely Saint Francis who was highly regarded among the Dominicans. It is said that Saint Dominic and Saint Francis met and became friends in Rome, establishing a close tie between Franciscans and Dominicans that has continued to the present day. Important symbols of Saint Francis in this painting are the brown habit, the red Bible in his right hand and the cross of sacrifice in his left. Paintings by Fra Paolino are in the permanent collections of the Getty Museum in California and the Orélans Musée des Beaux Arts in France. |
