Freeman Butts, Dry Creek, acrylic on canvas, 1989 |
May 5 - August 19, 2006 View the diversity of Montana's landscape through the eyes of artists ranging from 19th century to contemporary, crossing the arid reaches of Eastern Montana to the sweeping vistas of the Northern Rockies. Many works rarely viewed by the public are showcased, including works by Edgar Paxson, Ralph DeCamp, Joseph Henry Sharp, Elizabeth Lochrie, and John Fery. Featured here is Dry Creek by Montana artist Freeman Butts. Butts (1928-1998) left behind an enormous artistic legacy. At a young age, Butts embraced the vigorous brushwork and gesturalism of action painting. Looseness, fluidity of line, high energy and speed of execution characterize his work.
