George Longfish: A Retrospective

Internationally noted Native American artist George Longfish (Seneca/Tuscarora) is known for his mixed media paintings that explore contemporary Native issues. Longfish directed UM's Graduate Program in American Indian Art in 1972, and taught at University of California - Davis, 1973 - 2003. This exhibition featuring 35 years of Longfish's work is organized by MMAC and will travel to venues throughout the U.S. Accompanying the exhibition will be a full color catalog. Meloy and Paxson Galleries

Exhibition Catalog for
George Longfish: A Retrospective

This 56 page full-color exhibition catalog, produced by MMAC and published by The University of Montana Press contains images of all of the exhibition artworks. Catalog author Kate Morris, Ph.D. of Santa Clara University discusses Longfish's work of the past 35 years, and MMAC Curator Manuela Well-Off-Man contributes a foreword discussing Longfish's role as Director of the UM Graduate Program in American Indian Art in 1972.

The catalog will be available for purchase online and at MMAC's galleries by April 3, 2007. It is funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Montana Arts Council.


MMAC ARTWORK TO TOUR THROUGH CHINA

Stephanie J. Frostad, Bright & Early

MMAC is lending Bright & Early, an oil painting by Missoula artist and UM alum Stephanie J. Frostad, to join the traveling exhibition Out West: The Great American Landscape, organized by the Meridian International Center in Washington D.C. This exhibition includes 68 works by 50 American artists whose work depicts the land in the American West.

The exhibition completes a U.S.- China cultural exchange begun with the exhibit, Ancient Threads, Newly Woven: Recent Art from China's Silk Road, which appeared at MMAC in Fall, 2005 and is currently touring the U.S. Out West: The Great American Landscape, was on view in Washington D.C. at the Meridian International Center through March 4, 2007 and begins its China tour later this month. The exhibition opens in Beijing and will travel to cities located in the Silk Road region, including Urumqi, Xi'an, and Shanghai.
