Internationally noted Native American artist George Longfish will be in Missoula and on the Flathead Reservation for lectures and class visits April 3-5. Don't miss this opportunity to meet the artist and hear him speak about his work.

Longfish's work is currently featured in the exhibition, George Longfish: A Retrospective, on view through April 20, 2007 in MMAC's Meloy and Paxson Galleries. Longfish directed UM's Graduate Program in American Indian Art in 1972, and taught at the University of California - Davis, 1973 - 2003. This exhibition featuring 35 years of Longfish's work, will travel to venues throughout the U.S. Accompanying the exhibition will be a full color catalog. Exhibition Catalog for
George Longfish: A Retrospective

This 56-page full-color exhibition catalog, produced by MMAC and published by The University of Montana Press contains images of all of the exhibition artworks. Catalog author Kate Morris, Ph.D. of Santa Clara University, discusses Longfish's work of the past 35 years, and MMAC Curator Manuela Well-Off-Man contributes a foreword discussing Longfish's role as Director of the UM Graduate Program in American Indian Art in 1972.

The catalog will be available for purchase online and at MMAC's galleries April 5, 2007. It is funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Montana Arts Council.


MAJOR ART LOAN TO MMAC TO BE DISPLAYED IN UM MANSFIELD LIBRARY

Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Torso of a Walking Woman, or Torso Turning, 37.5" high, conceived ca. 1914, cast in the 1920s

MMAC is excited to announce it will receive its second major art loan from an anonymous private collector.

Torso of a Walking Woman, or Torso Turning, by German Expressionist sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck
(1881-1919), will be on display April 10, 2007 through July 23, 2007 in the Mansfield Library lobby. Considered to be one of the artist's most important works, it embodies the artist's mature style.

Mansfield Library open hours:

Sat. 10:30 - 6:30pm; Sun. 10:30 - 2am


ART CALLS

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture is coordinating two calls for public art to be placed in the newly constructed UM Anderson Hall Building, which will house the School of Journalism. One art call is open to professional artists from throughout the U.S., and the other is open to professional Native American artists from Montana. The deadline for both art calls has been extended to May 18, 2007. For more information and proposal guidelines, follow the links below:
