Henry Meloy: The Portraits

July 12 - August 9, 2007
Paxson Gallery

This exhibition features the works of Montana native Henry Meloy (1902 - 1951). Meloy's portraits, which employ modernist approaches to line and form, convey emotive detail in his depictions of family and friends. These portraits are part of a permanent loan to MMAC from the Henry Meloy Educational Trust. After the exhibition's debut at MMAC, it will travel through a Montana Art Gallery Directors Association sponsored tour to various venues throughout Montana.

CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION

DeCamp, Rosebud Morning, before cleaning

MMAC is steadily making progress on efforts to conserve and preserve Permanent Collection artworks. Over 100 historic treasures from the collection have been identified as high priority pieces to be cleaned, restored and/or given new frames with generous funding from the Chutney Foundation and Grizzly Riders International.

At left is Rosebud Morning by Ralph Earl DeCamp, which was recently cleaned by Kalispell conservator Joe Abbrescia. Varnish that had yellowed over the years from environmental impurities was carefully removed, and archival new varnish was applied. The cleaning of this piece was made possible by a gift from the Grizzly Riders International.

STAFF PROFILE

Claire Olivier

Claire Olivier

Claire Olivier began work at MMAC in January 2007. She assists with efforts to catalog the Permanent Collection by conducting research and entering information from catalog cards into an Access database. These efforts will be invaluable as the museum moves forward in the coming year to adopt new collections management software. The software will streamline staff time and better organize information about the collection for research purposes.

A British citizen, Claire came to the U.S. in 1989. She has previously worked for the Mayor's Office during Mike Kadas' tenure, the Five Valleys Land Trust, and is a founding board member for City Club Missoula.

Claire states that what she likes best about her position at MMAC is learning about the breadth of the Permanent Collection. "The collection," says Claire, "which includes more than 10,000 pieces, drives the need for a new building to properly share and care for these treasures."
