HIDDEN TREASURE . . . . . . . . . . . . FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

Master of St Gregory Spanish Altar Panel

Master of St. Gregory, Spanish Altar Panel, wood support, ca. 1490, 28" x 26", Donated by Mrs. Raymonde Erzanski

Spanish Altar Panel by the
Master of Saint Gregory (1465-1541)

In this Spanish Altar piece, St. Gregory kneels in prayer before an altar on which are placed a Sacramentary, a Host, and a chalice. The earliest references to the legend of the Mass of St. Gregory appear relatively late, dating from the first half of the 15th century in Germany.

This piece, one of the oldest works in MMAC's Permanent Collection, will be restored through a donation from the Grizzly Riders. Over the next three years, this and other works will be examined and treated by professional conservators, through the generous support of both the Grizzly Riders and the Chutney Foundation.
