exhibition, Miracles and Myths:
Mapping the world from 1572-1921

Becky James

Becky James has been serving MMAC as an intern since February, 2008. An English Literature major with a minor in Art History/Criticism, she will graduate with her B.A. from UM in May, 2008. Originally from Palmer, AK, she plans to gain a variety of museum experiences through internships and attend a graduate school program in Curation and Art Criticism.

Of her experience at MMAC, Ms. James states, "I appreciate the opportunity to be an intern at MMAC because it is helping me focus my interests in the field of art. I am enjoying the process of learning how a museum runs and how it interacts with the larger community. I look forward to building on wisdom I have gained from this experience and applying it to my future studies. In addition, it has also been great fun."

MUSEUM ASSESSMENT PROGRAM OUTCOMES

A team of two talented museum experts visited MMAC April 3 - 4, 2008. Susan Bandes, Director of the Kresge Art Museum at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, and Michael Panhorst, Curator at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in Alabama spent two full days meeting with museum staff, advisors, and other stakeholders to examine the museum's operations and collections and make recommendations on best practices and strategic planning.

"Susan and Michael offered us invaluable ideas, information, and encouragement. We are grateful to them for their generous advice and counsel and to the MAP Program for this opportunity," states MMAC Director Barbara Koostra.

The team will present MMAC with a full report on their finding in the next few months. This assessment is conducted through the American Association of Museums, and will help MMAC in its efforts toward effective community service and programming and in planning for a new building.
