Douglas John Connah (1871-1941) studied at the Royal Academy (Dusseldorf,) Academie Julian in Paris. He later studied with W.M. Chase and Jules LeFebre. From 1925 -1941 he was co-director of the American School of Design. He was a friend of John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler.
