John Francis Murphy (1853-1921)
was a self taught artist, a member of the National Academy, and known for his
landscapes. His first exhibit was in 1876 at the National Academy of Design in
New York City. Much of his early work was based on direct observation of
nature and he received a great deal of influence from the Barbizon school painters
Corot, Rousseau and Daubigny. His later paintings are noted for their techniques
of lacquering and glazing.
