SUMMER MUSIC CAMPS
Welcome to the University of Montana Summer Music Camp. Since 1952, we have been offering the summer camp that has become a tradition for Montanans and many from around the country. Music camp is a great time to interact with student musicians from around the region while learning from UM's music faculty, invited guest experts and our team of college counselors. Whether you are a serious all-state level musician or someone who just loves playing, the UM Summer Music Camp has a place for you.

Placement Auditions
- Submit a recording of two contrasting pieces. Please send files or links to your recordings to Dr. Hahn at christopher.hahn@umontana.edu
- List several pieces you have worked on in the past 12 months.
- Submit a letter of recommendation from your piano teacher.
- Recordings must be submitted as soon as possible after applying in order to assure proper placement in camp ensembles.
In order to help match students for duets and piano team pieces, it is necessary for all campers to submit a recording of solo repertoire currently being studied. Letters of recommendation and repertoire lists can be emailed directly to Dr. Hahn at christopher.hahn@umontana.edu

Geared toward curious and adventurous musicians, Week 2 has the largest enrollment and has the most diverse offerings for those who want to explore different kinds of music. Offering band, jazz, strings, world music and song writing.

Baritone/Euphonium, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute, French Horn, Oboe, Percussion, Saxophones, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba. If you play a traditional band instrument listed above and also play Drumset, Piano, Guitar or Bass, we'd love to have you play in jazz band.

Parents and family are encouraged to attend. All on-campus events are free.

- Thursday - Small Ensemble Night, 7:00 PM, Music Recital Hall.
- Friday - Final Large Ensemble Concert, 3:30 PM, Music Recital Hall and Dennison Theatre.
Placement Auditions
Woodwinds & Brass:
- Chromatic scale from as low as you can comfortably play to as high as you can comfortably play.
- 2 minutes of a piece of your choice that shows your technique and musicality.
- Sight reading.

This camp is for students of all levels interested in spending a week having fun learning more about jazz! Each camper will play in a big band (5) and a small group (10), take improvisation (7 levels), jazz theory, have an opportunity to learn from professionals in the field and learn alongside our world-class faculty. Faculty performances and fun activities throughout the week. The UM Summer Jazz Camp is open to instrumental students and is held on the University of Montana campus. Please join us for this incredible week of jazz education, making friends and spectacular music.

For the best educational experience, we will accept the following instruments on a first-come, first-served basis. Once we have reached this instrumentation, applicants will be placed on a waiting list:

Cost includes tuition, lunches, t-shirt and camp pictures. Dinners are also included in the cost for Week 2 - Band Instruments and Week 3 - Jazz Instruments. You may purchase a dinner option for $70/wk. for camps where dinner is not included. Meals are at our award winning UM Food Zoo.

Resident
Cost includes tuition, three meals per day, t-shirt and camp pictures. Residents of the UM Music Camps stay on campus in one of our dormitories and eat at our award winning Food Zoo cafeteria. One music camp counselor is assigned to supervise ten campers in the dorms. Students are separated on different floors by gender indentity with enforce curfews.
Rooms are furnished with twin beds, closet, drawers, table, chair, curtains, mattress pad, pillow w/case, 2 flat sheets, 2 small towels, 1 wool blanket and free wireless internet. You are encouraged to bring bath & face towels, washcloth, soap, shampoo, personal care items.

General Information
All Campers
- Lockers will be available for your use and assigned at the time of registration. Locks will be provided and there will be no charge for their use.
- Please bring clothing appropriate for the two student performances, one on Thursday evening and the final performance on Friday late afternoon. For these occasions, nice casual dresses or skirts and tops, slacks with short-sleeved shirts, with or without tie, are suggested.
Band/Jazz Campers
- Your instrument(s)! Be sure they are in good working order and clearly marked with personal identification.
- All necessary musical accessories - a folding music stand; extra reeds; valve/slide oil, cork grease, mutes, and any other items which apply directly to your instrument. Bring a music lyre if you have one if it is a year that we play at the Missoula Paddleheads game.
String Campers

RESIDENT CAMPERS
Resident campers will be staying in one of the UM residence halls on campus, with university music students serving as full-time counselors. Mail from family and friends can be sent to the following address and will be distributed daily.

- A good, loud alarm clock!!!!!!
- Typical summer attire for casual wear - it's usually warm but do bring some warm clothing and a jacket.
- An electric fan! Of course, we don’t know what the weather will be like when you are here, but dormitory rooms are not air-conditioned.
- Any other personal items that will help your stay be comfortable and fun
- Optional - mosquito repellent and sunscreen
- Umbrella and/or rain gear for rainy days
Remember, the camp is just one week long, and those of you living on campus should plan wisely and pack accordingly.

Resident Campers:
Meals for resident campers will be provided from Sunday dinner through Friday lunch for Weeks 2 & 3 and through Saturday breakfast for Week 1. Campers can bring their own snacks and extra money for food or souvenirs. Most meals are in the UM Food Zoo with the exception of Sunday dinner (School of Music lawn), Wednesday lunch (Caras Park) and Wednesday dinner (cookout at Bonner Park).
Commuter Campers:
Week 2 - Band Instruments and Week 3 - Jazz Instruments: All lunches and dinners are incluuded in the price of the camp.
Week 1 - Piano and Week 2 - Strings: All lunches are included in the price of the camp for . Dinners can be purchased for $70/wk.
