Brass Audition Requirements
French Horn and Trumpet
1. All MAJOR and two minor
     scales and two minor
     scales.
2. Chromatic scale
     Horn: low C - high C
     Trumpet: low F# - high C
3. 1 lyrical solo/etude an
     1 technical solo/etude
     OR one solo/etude
      showing both styles.
4.  Sight reading.

Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
1.  Chromatic - low e high b-flat
2.  Tbn & Euph: Etude from
      Rochut's "Melodious
      Etudes vol 1" 
3.  Tuba - Etude from
      Bordogni's Bel Canto
      Studies

Percussion Audition Requirements—Perform at least one of the
elements listed below.
  1. Snare Drum:
    1. Rudiments: Flam, Flam-tap, Paradiddle, 5 stroke roll, Single stroke roll [Play each open (slow) to closed (fast as possible) to open].
    2. Buzz Roll: Play 16 count buzz roll starting pp, cresc. to ff and diminuendo to pp
    3. Solo: perform a prepared solo (rudimental or orchestral) of appropriate difficulty.
  2. Mallet Keyboard: Prepared solo or etude of appropriate difficulty.
  3. Timpani: Prepared solo or etude.
  4. Drumset: Styles: medium swing, up tempo swing, bossa-nova, samba, 16-note based funk. Phrase every four bars with a light fill. Soloing: one or more of the above styles and trade fours with yourself (4 bars of time, 4 bars of solo & repeat). You may also play a written or prepared solo.

James Smart, Trumpet— james.smart@umontana.edu, 406-243-4382
Director of Bands.  Director of the UM Symphonic Wind Ensemble.  Performed on trumpet with the Orchestra of Southern Utah, North Idaho Symphony (now called the Coeur d’Alene Symphony), Arizona Contemporary Music Ensemble, and is currently a member of the Missoula Symphony.  Primary teachers include Charles Daval, Ramon Parcells, and Kevin Good.  Other studies with Armando Ghitalla, Charles Schleuter, Allan Dean, and David Turnbull.  BM (trumpet performance and music education) University of Michigan, MME & DMA (ABD in conducting) Arizona State University.

Associate Director of Bands, Director of Athletic Bands. He directs the Concert Band, UM Grizzly Marching Band and Basketball Pep Band as well as several education classes. Dr. Griggs holds degrees from the University of Northern Colorado (D.A.- 2004, M.M.-2000) and Brigham Young University. (B.M.E.-1992) He taught Jr. High and High School band for 7 years before coming to The University of Montana.  Dr. Griggs has taught private trumpet lessons for more than 20 years and has performed in groups ranging from jazz bands to symphony orchestras.

Associate Principal/Third Horn – Spokane Symphony Orchestra, Solstice Wind Quintet, Cathedral Brass, Clarion Brass, Sitelo Trio, Connoisseur Concerts and Allegro Chamber Music Series, Spokane Falls Brass Band. Appeared on  NPR’s “A Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor.  Heard nationally on CNN, TBS, NBC, ABC, and Warner Brothers networks.

Principal Trombone – Missoula Symphony Orchestra.  UM Jazz Director.  Founder and Director of the Buddy Defranco Jazz Festival.  Studied trombone with Larry Weinman and Steven Zellmer of the Minnesota Orchestra. Held positions with symphony orchestras in North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Texas, New Mexico and current Principal Timpanist and Percussionist with the Missoula Symphony Orchestra.  Director of UM Islanders Steel Drum Band, World Percussion, Percussion Ensemble.  Sponsored by Zildjian Cymbals, Latin Percussion and Innovative Percussion.  BM (percussion performance) Mars Hill, MM (percussion performance) University of Akron, DMA (percussion performance) University of North Texas.
