UM's traditionally outstanding jazz program includes three Jazz Bands and smaller jazz combos, all open to students by audition. Jazz Bands I & III are directed by Professor Lance Boyd, while Jazz Band II is usually led by the graduate teaching assistant for band. Auditions are held the first week of classes in the fall. In conjunction with the Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival, our students have the opportunity to play with and learn from jazz professionals.
