Percussion Ensembles

The UM Percussion Ensemble performs an eclectic mix of repertoire including everything from contemporary works to classical and jazz/rock fusion transcriptions. Recent concerts have featured the music of Frank Zappa, Pat Metheny, Coldplay and GONG.  The group has performed with some of the top percussionists including – on drumset, Steve Smith, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Gregg Bissonette, Will Kennedy, Chris Wabich and Steve Houghton;  on marimba – Mark Ford and Julie Spencer; on vibraphone – Ed Saindon, Arthur Lipner and Gary Gibson; on latin percussion – Jesus Diaz, Lalo Davila, Luis Benetti and the Afro-Cuban All Stars out of Oakland.   The group can be heard on a Fall (November) and Spring Concert (April) as well as at events like the annual Fusion Concert.  The Percussion Ensemble was the featured ensemble at the 2013 UM Odyssey of the Stars event in March.  The ensemble has been invited to perform throughout the region and tours periodically.  The ensembles are open to percussion majors and non-majors.  However, non-majors are required to audition for admission into the groups as there are limited spots.

The UM Drumline has become one of the most popular groups on campus, performing at all home games as a part of the UM Grizzly Marching Band.  The group is also invited to perform for a variety of university and community events and has traveled with the football team to the Division I-AA Championships six times.  The exciting ensemble creates a variety of sounds and visual effects in their performances.  The group performs in the contemporary corps-style.
