Lasting Impressions – Focused on creating exotic sonic atmospheres, the Impressionist movement in music was a reaction to the hyper-dramatic excesses of the Romantic era.  Impressionist titles are descriptive and the music works to create a concerted picturesque mood that will not disappoint.  Tonight, Dr. James Smart and the UM Symphonic Wind Ensemble explore works from the beginning of the movement in 19th-century France to “neo” Impressionistic music of American composer Joseph SchwantnerDebussy – La cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral),  Ravel – La vallée des cloches (Valley of the Bells), RespighiHuntingtower Ballad, Schwanter – …and the mountains rising nowhere, Schmitt – Dionysiaques (100th anniversary in 2013), Fauré - Pavane
