University of Montana Summer Conducting Workshop
"The critiques were helpful, encouraging, and non-confrontational, and every conductor at every level came away with useful musical skills."
"Prior to this class I had no idea of the power of a facial expression, or a slight difference in a hand gesture in influencing the music. I feel I learned a lot from this experience."

The University of Montana Summer Conducting Workshop is a teaching workshop designed for music educators of all levels from elementary through university. Twenty-four spots are available on a first-come first-served basis. Daily activities include aesthetic movement sessions, special topics lectures, and conducting a laboratory ensemble (full and chamber). While the repertoire and instrumentation of this workshop is a wind ensemble, the concepts of communication through gesture, serving as a conduit between the composer and the ensemble, and rehearsal management are universal in the wind, string, and voice mediums. The full ensemble will be comprised of workshop participants, auditors, and available members of the UM Symphonic Wind Ensemble. In an effort to encourage the youngest members of our profession, current undergraduates who have taken two or more semesters of conducting may apply for a reduced registration fee (Student Participant).
