Graduate Application and Requirements

1.  Application Materials and Deadlines

The deadlines for fall, spring, and summer terms are open.  The academic calendar is accessible via this link (http://www.umt.edu/provost/academiccalendar/)
 
Instructions for applying to the Graduate School are in the Apply section on this web site (http://www.umt.edu/grad/Apply/Applying for Admission.php#Apply).
 
In addition to the application materials required by the Graduate School, the School of Music also requires:
 
  • A cover letter stating the applicant’s background, qualifications, and objectives in pursuing graduate study sent directly to the School of Music Director
  • Three letters of recommendation (electronic submission through the Admission Application preferred)
  • Official transcripts sent directly to the School of Music Director
  • Performance Emphasis: Live or recorded audition of solo musical performance
  • Composition Emphasis: Examples of original compositions (scores, required; live recordings strongly suggested)
  • Musical Theater Emphasis: Live or recorded audition of solo or ensemble musical performance
  • Music Education Emphasis: Teaching philosophy statement
  • Performance students interested in Graduate Teaching Assistantships and Fellowships are strongly encouraged to schedule an in-person audition/interview
  • Applicants should carefully review the audition information posted on the School of Music website

2. Program Requirements for Admission

  • Completed undergraduate degree in major area or approved equivalent
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or skills, through audition or exam at the discretion of the faculty, at a level suitable for acceptance into a faculty studio or other area of study

3. Assistantship Application and Deadline

Applications must be postmarked by March 1 when applying for a teaching assistantship or fellowship. However, entrance auditions must be completed in advance of March 1.  Incoming and current students requesting a teaching assistantship/fellowship should submit a letter of application (cover letter) and resume to:
