The National NALSA Moot Court Competition is an annual event held by the Native American Law Students Association.  Teams from law schools across the country will head to a select city to compete against each other.  The Competition provides an opportunity for law students interested in Federal Indian and Tribal law to meet each other and practitioners.  The Competition begins in the fall with the release of the Problem, written each year by a leading scholar in Federal Indian and Tribal Law.  Team registrations are due in the late fall.  Based off of the Problem, teams of two write an appellate-level brief on behalf of one of the parties in the suit.  The Briefs are due in mid-January.  At Competition, teams compete against each other in oral argument rounds, arguing for both parties over several rounds.  Awards are given out for Best Briefs, Best Oral Advocates, and Best Advocates.  For more information, please see the Moot Court Rules.

Every April National NALSA holds a meeting that coincides with the Federal Bar Association Indian Law Conference. During the annual meeting the NNALSA board accepts nominations for the new Executive Board. Members then vote for candidates during the conference. Other business that occurs during the meeting consists of members voting on the next host of the National NALSA Moot Court Competition and Writing Competition, awarding the NALSA Chapter of the year, awarding the 1L of the year, awarding the 2L of the year, awarding the 3L of the year, and awarding the Alumni/Alumna of the year.

Each year, the UM NALSA Chapter attempts to send as many interested members to the Annual National NALSA Meeting and Federal Bar Association's Indian Law Conference as possible. At this conference, members learn about the current legal issues facing American Indians. Another bonus is the networking with other members as well as making initial contacts with potential employers.
