Personal Summary

Karin Schalm has a B.A. in African American Studies from Wesleyan University and three master's degrees from the University of Montana: M.A. in Literature, M.F.A. in Creative Writing, and M.S. in Environmental Studies. After college, she travelled from Baja to Alaska as an outdoor educator, teaching natural history and guiding extended wilderness adventures across the West. Upon arriving in Missoula, she co-taught Wilderness Politics of the Rocky Mountain Front for UM’s summer program. She has also taught English at Sentinel High School and poetry through the Missoula Writing Program, serving as the Poet-in-Residence at Sussex School for six years. As a Certified Master Gardener, she worked as both the Program Director and Executive Director at the Missoula Urban Demonstration (MUD) Project, developing horticultural therapy programs, the Missoula Tool Library, and the first bike/compost program in Missoula - demonstrating alternative transportation, zero waste management, organic gardening and community service all at once. Karin served as the Program Coordinator for UM's Creative Writing Program for nine years, also participating on the Boards of Free Verse and Literacy Volunteers of America. She spent time in the global teach industry as the Operations Manager at Submittable and as a Customer Support Specialist at DFTBA (Don't Forget to be Awesome) Records - part of Hank and John Green's YouTube empire. (Think SciShow.) She is happy to currently call the School of Pharmacy her work home.
