Advising Guidelines for Philosophy Majors
The University of Montana is the definitive authority on graduation requirements. Please refer to the section on General University Requirements under Academic Information in the front of your governing UM catalogue.
A minimum of 33 credits in Philosophy is required, in addition to General Education Requirements, in order to obtain a B.A. with a major in Philosophy.
Foreign Language
At least 3 semesters of a single foreign language.
The following are recommended:
French, German, Latin or Greek.
Lower-Division Requirements
PHIL 210, 215, 251H, 252H
Note: PHIL 251H and PHIL 252H should normally be completed by the end of the sophomore year.
Upper-Division Requirements
At least 21 credits in courses numbered 300 and above, including PHIL 300, PHIL 480 and one course from each of the following groups:
History: PHIL 450, 453, 461, 463
Value Theory
PHIL 323, 325, 421, 422, 427, 429, 441, 443, 444, 455, 477
Logic and Analytic Philosophy: PHIL 410, 411, 469, 471
Continental Philosophy
PHIL 465, 467
A PHIL 395 or 495 Special Topics course may be used to count as a course from any of the above four groups as its topic makes appropriate (consult the department advisor).
Electives and General Education:
Majors are encouraged to take European Civilization (HIST 104/105 or 107/108) and Introduction to the Humanities (LS 151/152) during their first two years, and to consider a minor in another discipline.
Advising Guidelines for Philosophy Minors
To earn a minor in philosophy, the student must complete:
PHIL 210, 215, 251H, 252H, 300E and one additional course numbered above
300.
