Dr. Stephen Reno's Report to the Board of Regents

Summary of BOR Workshop at UM on Wednesday, 17 February 2010

The next president of the University of Montana should be someone who will grasp the Institution's commitment to excellence, who can foresee the risks and challenges ahead, and who will effectively lead the University's campuses toward continued success. That was a common theme in statements given to the members of the Board of Regents on Wednesday by members of the UM campus community.

The Regents, meeting for the first time since President George M. Dennison announced his retirement in August 2010, expressed their plans to form a presidential search advisory committee with a goal of hiring a new president by this Fall.  The meeting in the University Center Ballroom was an opportunity for students, University faculty and staff, community members, and friends of UM to talk about the qualities they would like to see in the next president.  About 75 people attended.

Most who spoke praised President Dennison's abilities and accomplishments, saying they want to see continued strong leadership in many areas:

  • liberal arts education;
  • academic excellence;
  • research;
  • concern for global environment;
  • human rights;
  • student-centered focus;
  • faculty involvement in decision making;
  • alumni relations;
  • athletics;
  • multicampus leadership skills;
  • legislative relations;
  • public relations and communications;
  • academic experience;
  • vision for investment and change;
  • vision and skills in regard to private fund raising;
  • accessibility to students, employees, and the public.

The Regents and the Commissioner of Higher Education will work immediately to form the search advisory committee and involve the public in the process of recruiting UM's next president.
