Shaping the UM of Tomorrow

In Feb. 2018, we reinvigorated our University Planning Committee and asked that group to examine our current mission and propose changes to ensure a concise, clear, and compelling University of Montana Mission Statement; and Draft a clear, intentional, and integrated strategic plan for immediate action; the plan should include areas of focus and areas we will choose not to sustain, both programmatically and structurally given our fiscal constraints.

The UPC developed a mission statement and defined academic communities of excellence, infused by our strong core curriculum. They also identified opportunities to enhance and sustain the quality of our academic programs. I’m using their thoughtful analysis and careful work to draft recommendations to campus about our future direction. I will continue to consult with the deans as we develop ideas for academic programs to curtail, discontinue, or reorganize in the context of UM’s future mission and identity and in the context of our commitment to educating the whole student.

On April 17, I will present to Faculty Senate my preliminary recommendations, which will include our vision for the future as well as the more immediate programmatic and structural adjustments we will make to position the University for this future. Following this presentation, there will be another opportunity for feedback during a two-week period. I will take all of this input seriously, and after careful consideration, I will refine my recommendations for presentation at the May Board of Regents meeting.
