Student Travel Fund
The Offices of the President and Provost maintain a limited pool of funds for student travel related to academic opportunities such as conference participation, fieldwork, research, etc.
Awards are competitive; many more worthy applications are submitted than can be funded.
Applications must be complete, using the correct form (including all required signatures) or they will not be considered.
- Individuals can receive up to $400 and groups (3 or more students) can receive up to $1,000.
- A student may only receive one student travel fund award per academic year.
The process for awarding Student Travel Funding has changed in 2013-14. Only applications submitted on the current form will be accepted. Please read the below directions carefully and call 243-4689 with questions.
Incomplete applications will not be considered. Only the most up-to-date application form (see below) will be accepted; previous application forms will not be considered.
Completed applications may be emailed, mailed, or hand-delivered to the Office of the Provost (UH 126). They are due by 5:00 p.m. on the 5th of October, December, February, April and June. Should the deadline fall on a weekend or holiday, the effective deadline will be the business day prior to the weekend or holiday.
To ensure that all levels of academic administration are aware of requests, department chairs or program directors and deans must sign applications. Students must also sign their applications.
In the case of group requests, the names of all the students in the group must be listed on the application and the sponsoring faculty member must sign on behalf of the student group.
Only one application per person, per cycle, may be submitted.
How Funds are Awarded
First, applications are checked to ensure they comply with the following criteria:
- The application form is complete and includes required signatures;
- The travel is scheduled to take place at a future date (we will not reimburse expenses after travel has occurred);
- The budget is complete and includes an itemized list of anticipated expenses;
- The student has not already received funding in the same academic year.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to fund all the qualified applications received. We use a lottery system to ensure that each qualified application (based on the criteria above) has an equal chance of being funded. Students will be notified of the lottery outcome by letter and email within two weeks of the application due date.
Transfer of Funds
If an application is successful, funds will be transferred to the student's sponsoring department.
Students who receive support from the student travel fund will prepare a report on their project and submit it to the Office of the Provost (UH126) within 30 days of completion. The report should include a short summary describing the project and must be signed by the student's or student group's faculty sponsor/adviser as well as their dean. Reports may be submitted by email to OfficeoftheProvost@umontana.edu.
The Office of the Provost may contact students to request permission to feature experiences supported by the student travel fund on the Academic Affairs website.
