Rural Family Support Specialist
Training Program (RFSST)
PRE-SERVICE TRAINING
--Introduction
/ Certification
The re-authorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (formerly Education of the Handicapped Act) - Public Law 99-457, Part H, provides incentives to enable states to plan, develop, and implement comprehensive services for infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. Therefore, the number of family support and educational programs specifically directed toward responding to the needs of these young children and their families is increasing both in Montana and nationwide. This has created a significant demand for personnel from various health, human service, and educational fields who are academically prepared to provide the specialized, mandated services.
In direct response to IDEA and PL 99-457 and professional needs, the Department of Psychology, in conjunction with The University of Montana's Master of Interdisciplinary Studies program, the Rural Institute on Disabilities, and the Human and Family Development Minor, is offering course work for an Rural Family Support Specialist Training Program (RFSST). This course work will prepare students from a variety of human service disciplines with the basic skills and competencies necessary to provide specialized family-centered care and education for infants and toddlers who have or are at-risk for disabilities or developmental delays and their families in rural areas.
The Rural Family Support Specialist Training curriculum is offered through the Human and Family Development Minor at The University of Montana. Each of the courses has a strong family-centered, interdisciplinary, rural Montana focus. Each course includes applied experiences that enable students to integrate and apply the information that is presented in the readings, discussions, and lectures.
Certification
Upon completion of the six courses and intensive practicum, the student will be prepared to meet the requirements from the lead agency for Part H, Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, Developmental Disabilities Programs, for certification of professionals providing early intervention services.
