Office Hours:

and by appointment
Emphasis and Research Interests:
Political sociology, economic sociology, social movements and collective action, social and institutional change, labor and labor movements, inequality and social justice, and sociology of education.
Current Project:
I am working on a book manuscript which explores the mainstreaming and professionalization of social change in the 1990s. The project compares Teach for America and the AFL-CIO's Organizing Institute in order to understand the emergence, and evolution, of new approaches to social change during this period.
I am also working on several articles. One explores perceptions of effective leadership among union organizers and workers involved in unionization drives. Another article examines methodological issues in organizational research. Still another examines the process of, and barriers to, organizational change in non-profit organizations.
Future Project:
My next project focuses on education, specifically working conditions inside charter schools. I am interviewing current and former teachers, administrators, critics and supporters of two of the largest charter maintenance organizations in the country: Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) and Green Dot Schools. I examine teachers' experience working for these organizations, specifically the working conditions that they confront, in order to assess the sustainability of this approach to charter school reform.
