An initial cohort of Brazilian students arrived Jan. 14 at The University of Montana as part of a new partnership with Brazil’s Science Without Borders Program.
International Programs, in coordination with the Office of Senator Max Baucus, successfully applied for UM to serve as a host institution for the program, and new cohorts of undergraduate students will arrive each semester to study a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline.
“This new relationship with Brazil is of significant importance for UM,” said Mehrdad Kia, UM associate provost for International Programs. “Gov. Schweitzer just returned from Brazil, and Montana is initiating new exchange relationships, which should involve close collaboration with Brazilian universities.”
Kia also said the initiative aligns with emerging trends of focusing international education on the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), and the STEM disciplines.
The program provides scholarships to undergraduate students from Brazil for one year of study at colleges and universities outside of Brazil, with about half of the expected 100,000 participants to attend U.S. institutions. The Institute of International Education administers the placement of program participants at institutions in the U.S.
Plans currently are taking shape to update the Learning Commons in UM's Mansfield Library to better support student success. The Learning Commons will be upgraded to incorporate a variety of study areas, including multimedia work pods, areas for tutoring, group study and independent work.
