Law & Reporting for Faculty & Staff

Reporting

If a student reports a sexual assault to you, follow the steps outlined in the Secondary Survivor web page, and ensure to inform the survivor of your obligation to report the incident. For more resources, please refer to our Resources page.

Inform the survivor of your obligation to report the incident as soon as you realize what they intend to disclose.  This allows the student to make an informed decision about whether to share this information with you.  Remember, SARC provides a safe, confidential place for survivors to talk about their experience.

University of Montana employees* are required by Montana state law and University Policy to report sexual misconduct violations to the Title IX Office (406) 243-5710 within 24 hours.  Visit the UM Policy page for more information about mandatory reporting.

*Curry Health Center employees are exempt from reporting due to HIPAA policy.
