Acting/Directing - Auditions

No audition is initially required to become an undergraduate Theatre major. Transfer students are asked to audition for placement into the proper level of acting training if they wish to start the School of Theatre & Dance program at another point than Acting I. Students wishing to pursue this option must have at least one semester of university acting training on their transcripts. Course-placement auditions are scheduled through Theatre & Dance advising sessions at Orientation.

All BFA and MFA acting students in the School of Theatre & Dance are required to audition for and accept roles offered for all mainstage productions during the academic year as a part of their training. These students are required to present up-to-date headshots and resumes at each audition as well. All UM students regardless of major, UM faculty and staff, and members of the Missoula community are always invited to audition. Pre-BFA acting students are especially encouraged to audition as there are no requirements prohibiting them from being cast during their first semesters of training in the program. No roles are pre-cast except in the cases of special guest artists, MFA final creative projects, and Montana Repertory Theatre touring productions.

The School of Theatre & Dance typically holds auditions three times a year: in early September for Fall Term productions, in early December for Spring Term productions, and in late April or early May for the first production of the following Fall Term (since students must return to campus to begin rehearsal before the start of the academic year). Montana Repertory Theatre holds auditions for its Education Outreach and National tours in April and auditions for Montana Rep Missoula (MRM) productions as needed.
