Possible subjects within the School including further study of theatre history, dramatic theory, dramatic literature, or special topics in theatre research
AND/OR
A maximum of 15 credits in theatre-relevant courses outside the School including approved graduate-level electives in literary criticism, communication, rhetoric, ethics, philosophy, pedagogy, curriculum and instruction, art, music, modern and classical languages and literature, film, history, or other graduate-level courses as approved by an advisor
AND
A maximum of six credits of 596-Graduate Independent Study
One research-and-practice credit-load track is available:
27 credits of graduate-level coursework plus a 3-credit theatre practice project which is defended orally in the last semester (597-Research)
Two research credit-load tracks are also available:
27 credits of graduate-level coursework plus a 3-credit professional paper which is defended orally in the last semester (599-Profesisonal Paper)
OR
24 credits of graduate-level coursework plus a 6-credit critical thesis (minimum of 5,000-10,000 words) which is defended orally in the last semester (699-Thesis)
The thesis option is recommended for those considering a Ph.D. program. The professional-paper or practice project options are usually appropriate for those in the Teaching area of emphasis. A comprehensive written or oral examination can be administered at or near the formal defense of the thesis/professional paper/practice project at the discretion of the candidate’s review committee.
Each MA thesis/professional paper/practice project is reviewed by a graduate committee comprised of the MA advisor, another faculty member from the School of Theatre & Dance, and a third faculty member from another department/school. The thesis/professional paper/practice project is presented and defended.
