C&I 160: Learning Strategies for Higher Education

Professors Janet Zupan and Tammy Freimund teach several sections of this valuable two-credit course each fall and spring semester.
This class is the gateway to other TRIO services and is designed to help college students develop learning strategies which will help them
become successful students at The University of Montana.  Students are exposed to practical learning strategies for success in college.

Major topics covered include:

  • Preparing for academic success:  managing stress, finding time, improving concentration and combating forgetting.

  • Learning new study skills:  improving note-taking skills, reading critically, mastering material and thinking visually.

  • Taking tests:  how to best complete essay, fill-in-the-blank, and multiple choice tests at the college level.

Evaluation is based on the following criteria:   journals, quizzes, homework, final project, and attendance.  Students are expected to
develop a repertoire of useful study skills and to apply those skills to their own college coursework.
