Ray's Study Tip: Always, always go to class. I got good grades, even when I didn't get all the reading done, by taking good notes and (almost) never missing class.
I came to UM as a transfer student, graduated, and started a career that involved grant writing. After an interesting job in Denver and considerable travel around the U.S. I realized Montana was where I wanted to be. I came back, landed a job at Native American Studies, then wrote the TRiO SSS grant which I have directed ever since. I did some tutoring as a college student and can't imagine a more rewarding career than helping students succeed in college, especially students who might not have realized they had the potential to become college graduates. We have a lot of great TRiO student success stories we can tell. No doubt my best accomplishment as program director has been hiring an exceptionally talented, caring staff who make it fun to come to work.
I've learned a lot about how education looks through a student's eyes from my wife, a high school counselor in Missoula, and from the college experiences of my son and daughter. When I'm not working I love outdoor sports and the things people live in Montana for: hiking, biking, backpacking, and anything else that gets me outside in Montana. This campus and community make an ideal learning environment. No wonder I've never left.

Darlene's Study Tip: Having taken classes recently, I discovered what it is like to be a student, parent, wife, and employee at the same time. Juggling these roles can be very difficult, but using time-management skills makes it manageable. Also, I find "hitting every subject every day" helps with long-term retention and memorization.
It's hard to believe that I've been working with TRiO SSS for the past 16 years! Everyday present's new challenges at TRiO, and I find working with students is one of my most rewarding responsibilities. Advising is one of the most underestimated characteristics of student success and I'm proud to be one of many UM professional Advisors on campus!
I'm a native Montanan born and raised in Anaconda. I've spent time living in almost all the major cities in Montana and have a colorful work history! I have a fantastic family! My husband is a UM alum and we have two daughters who are in middle and elementary schools in Missoula. We enjoy following our daughter's activities which includes dance, soccer, basketball, track, gymnastics, and violin! When we aren't following our daughter's activities, we spend as much time as possible playing at Swan Lake!

Janet's Study Tip: Strive to be an active, reflective learner. Move beyond memorization and recitation, to the ideas, concepts, and spirit behind every subject. Your college experience can be mind-altering. Approach it with verve!
I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico (long ago!), but sped off from there and through my childhood to follow my dad in his career as a test pilot in the Air Force. He and my mom came from the Scott's Valley in Northern California, so for lack of a hometown, I adopted that one in my heart. In 1990, I earned an undergraduate degree in English Literature from California State University, Chico. I then came to The University of Montana, seeking an M.F.A. in Creative Writing (Poetry). Two years into that degree, I met and married a native Montanan (a move that extended my stay in this beautiful state!) We've been raising our three children together since 1992. After graduating, I've served as the director for Hellgate Writers, Inc., and worked as a poet-in-residence for the Missoula Writing Collaborative. I became part of the TRiO SSS staff in 1997 and feel very lucky and pleased about that!

Tammy's Study Tip: Take charge of your education! Get to know your professors, develop good study habits, take advantage of the programs on campus designed to help you be successful, and learn how to learn. Getting an education can be so much more than reaching the finish line. You have the opportunity begin a journey of lifelong learning, have fun, and enrich your life. Go for it!!
Given the beautiful Montana countryside and the vibrancy of a university community, Missoula is the perfect place for me to live and work. I arrived here in 1993, and am delighted to be a part of the TRiO SSS team. I have previously worked with 2 and 4 year universities in Montana and Minnesota, including The UM College of Forestry and Conservation and The College of Technology. This work helped me learn about the complexity of a university setting and the many opportunities available for students.
I am especially passionate about helping students find success in college. Going to college can be such a life changing experience, and having a good roadmap helps. In our C&I 160 course, Learning Strategies for Higher Education, we help you develop a roadmap, along with a plan as an individual student.
As an individual, I have 2 wonderful children and am married to a professor. Education is a big part of our life together. We also enjoy backpacking, traveling, and Lady Griz basketball games. My book club pals help keep me enlightened, and our area friends add a level of personal commitment to Missoula that is invigorating. Life is good.

Heather's Study Tip: Do your homework, even if it won't be graded or turned in. It will help you understand the class content, and you just might see a homework question on a test or quiz.
I grew up in a small town in north central Washington, but family on both sides came from Montana, which helps explain my love for this beautiful state. I moved to Missoula to complete my bachelor's degree in Communication Studies after two years of college in Seattle. I attempted big-city life a second time during a post-degree internship in Seattle and quickly realized that Montana was home. Returning to Missoula has proven to be a very good decision. I met my husband, re-discovered skiing, backpacking, camping, and rafting, and started working for TRiO!
Between the welcoming, knowledgeable staff and the hard-working, deserving students, I've found the TRiO office to be one of the most positive environments on campus!
