WHAT
IS ACADEMIC SUSPENSION?
Students enrolled at UM-M are expected to maintain a minimum cumulative
grade point average (CGPA) of 2.00. Students are placed on Academic
Probation at the end of any semester if their CGPA falls below 2.00.
Students are placed on Academic Suspension at the end of any semester
if they were on Academic Probation during their previous semester
and their CPGA remains below the 2.00 minimum. An exception is made
if they earn at least a 2.00 grade point average for the term (TGPA)
without this having the effect of bringing their CGPA up to the required
2.00 minimum. In this case, students remain on Academic Probation.
Students return to Good Academic Standing when their CGPA meets the
minimum 2.00 academic expectation.
The effect of Academic Suspension is that students may not re-enroll
at the University unless they are Reinstated. If the student had registered
for classes for the subsequent semester, those classes are dropped
and a hold is placed on further Cyberbear course registration until
a Reinstatement is transacted. The Registrar’s Office mails
letters to students who have been placed on Academic Suspension, with
information about this status, referral resource information and Reinstatement
policies and procedures.
Following Academic Suspension, students are informed that
Reinstatement is usually not granted until the student has stayed
out at least one semester, including summer session.
A student seeking reinstatement must meet with his or her advisor,
complete paperwork that addresses the student’s issues and then
must meet with the dean of his or her school or college to appeal
to be reinstated. Reinstatements are never automatic, requests for
reinstatements are unlikely to be approved unless the student offers
a carefully prepared plan for addressing the issues that caused the
academic trouble and that is endorsed by his or her advisor. A new
course schedule is also presented for the dean’s approval. Once
the reinstatement paperwork is approved by the dean’s office
representative, the student turns the reinstatement form into the
Registrar’s Office and the registration hold is lifted, so that
the student may re-register for classes.
Reinstated students remain on Academic Probation until their CPGA
returns to the expected 2.00 minimum.
Note: No retroactive grade changes, retroactive withdrawal from the
semester, completed “I” grades that may affect the term
GPA or subsequently repeated courses and replaced grades reverses
the effect of Academic Suspension. This remains on the student’s
transcript and academic record. The only possible removal of Academic
Probation or Suspension from a student’s record is if a professor
erroneously reported a grade or an incorrect grade was recorded in
error by University personnel.
REINSTATEMENT
TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA
To be reinstated, students
who have been suspended for academic reasons will seek the approval
of the academic dean of the school or college in which they intend
to enroll. Typically, retroactive grade changes, dropped courses or
withdrawals do not reverse the academic suspension status that is
recorded on the transcript. However, if academic suspension was the
result of a data entry error or a grading mistake, the transcript
will be modified to reflect more accurately the students’ academic
standing.
An academic reinstatement
is not automatic. The student will provide the reasons for previous
poor academic performance along with a carefully prepared plan for
improvement that is submitted for approval. A student who wishes to
be reinstated takes the following steps, in this order:
- Prints out and responds
to a Questionnaire For Suspendend
Students
- Meets with an advisor
in the student’s major academic department
- Prepares an Academic
Reinstatement Plan in consultation with the advisor
- Presents the advisor-approved
reinstatement plan to the dean for approval
- Submits the approved
reinstatement form to the Registrar’s Office which lifts the
suspension hold from the student record and allows the student to
access Cyberbear to register for classes.
The letter students receive
about their academic suspension apprises them of the above reinstatement
steps. In addition, suspended students may want to gather information
about available resources and programs at UM that are designed to
encourage academic success. For this information, go to http://www.umt.edu/uac
and look under Student Academic Support Programs.
A student who is denied
reinstatement may appeal this by writing to the University President
within ten days of receiving the notice of denial. A decision to deny
a reinstatement is usually not reversed without evidence that the
decision was made arbitrarily.
If a suspended and reinstated
student has not attended UM for more than two years, the student will
also need to complete an application for readmission through the Registrar’s
Office. The readmission form re-activates the student’s record
and, along with the reinstatement form, allows the student to register
for courses in Cyberbear. Go to
http://www.umt.edu/registrar/readmissions.htm for the readmission
form.
