The Undergraduate Advising Center advises Pre-Psychology
students until they meet the following requirements for Psychology:
- completed 30 credits.
- completed 6 credits of PSYC
Once a student meets these requirements, the student
goes to the Psychology Department for advising.
Psychology Major
Requirements Checklist
The following are steps to take when advising a Pre-Psychology
student:
Refer to the current catalog to view all Psychology
major requirements.
____Explain the Pre-Psychology checklist to the student.
1. COLUMN A: The core requirements of the major (top
to bottom).
a. Section #1—All required classes.
1. PSYC 100S is a pre-requisite to all other
PSYC classes
2. PSYC 120, 220, 320 are sequential, and must be taken in that
order (320 is for research emphasis only).
b. Section #2— MATH 117 must be taken before
PSYC 220
c. Section #3---These 200-level courses can be difficult because
of their technical biological influence.
d. Section #4—These classes are oriented towards the social
science side of Psychology. A good place to start getting U.D.
credit.
____Explain the area of emphasis requirement. They need
to complete the requirements in Column B or C
1. COLUMN B—GENERAL (for Non-Research Oriented
Psychology students) Don’t forget the upper-division writing
proficiency assessment and the upper-division writing class. PSYC
320 or 400 are good U.D. writing recommendations.
2. COLUMN C—RESEARCH (for students planning
on graduate work) 3.0 minimum GPA requirement for Pre-Professional.
Psychology only requires 30 credits in the major, thus
making it difficult to achieve 39 upper division credits. Recommend
a minor (Human Family & Development is a nice complement) or another
major
____Explain the backside of checklist that lists admission
requirements.
1. All students move from the PPSY designation to
PSYC upon completion of 30 semester credits and 6 semester credits
in Psychology. **Keep this side updated.
2. If students have met the 30 credits with 6 in
PSYC requirement, but have less than a 3.0 GPA, they will still
move to the PSYC department for advising, and will automatically
be listed as a General emphasis.
***Remember that incoming freshman can wait to take
PSYC 100S until their 2nd semester. Because of the limited major requirements
they will not get behind.
