Tips for Advising Four Bear Students

  • Ask the Student if he/she is a Four Bear student.

  • Contact Four Bear students early for scheduling advising appointments.

  • Be familiar with the Four Bear contract, Four Bear Contract Addendum, four-year worksheet, General Education Requirements and major prototypes.

  • Remind the student that he/she needs to be in his/her "ultimate" degree major prior to earning 45 credits (pre-majors and Undeclared studentsare no longer eligible after the student earns 45 credits). Some "pre-majors" have until 60 credits for students to become full majors-please see Four Bear Contract Addendum for details.

  • Direct the student to walk-in advising at the UNC for help regarding GER's.

  • Keep in mind that any remedial course, namely Math 002 and Math 005, do not earn credits toward a degree nor toward the Four Bear credit requirement.

  • Ask the student the status of their Writing Proficiency Assessment.

  • Document pertinent advising information in the student's file.

  • Continuing Four Bear students will need to submit an advisor-approved four-year plan of study at the completion of 60 credits (end of the student's sophomore year). Approved four-year plans need to be submitted to the Four Bear office, Lommasson Center 269, by the end of the semester (end of the student's fourth regular academic semester).
