Tips for Successful Four Bear Program Participation

  • Be familiar with the Four Bear Contract.
  • Be familiar with the Four Bear Contract "Addendum" (refers to student commitment #3-General Studies and Pre-majors).
  • Develop a preliminary four-year plan of study.
  • Qualified, entering first-time freshmen can sign up for the Four Bear Program through the last day of classes of the first term of enrollment at UM.
  • All "Change of Major" forms (regardless of additions or deletions) need to be signed by the Four Bear Coordinator before the Registrar's Office will process the major change.
  • Continuing Four Bear students need to submit an advisor-approved four-year plan of study at the completion of 60 credits - the end of the sophomore year. Approved four-year plans need to be submitted to the Four Bear office, Lommasson Center 269, by the end of the semester (end of the student's fourth regular academic semester).
  • Major "prototypes" (four-year plans of study developed for most majors at UM that serve as guides for students participating in the Four Bear Program) are available.
  • GER (General Education Requirement) forms and the Four Bear Four-Year Graduation Plan worksheets are available.
Following are some guidelines to aid you in your success in the Four Bear four-year graduation plan:
  • You must notify the Four Bear Coordinator (Lommasson Center 269, 243-2835) if:
    • you are planning to change your major
    • you are considering a foreign exchange
    • you are seeking approval to stop the four-year clock due to an emergency or other circumstances
    • you are planning to take summer courses elsewhere
  • Advising etiquette:
    • Identify yourself as a Four Bear student to your advisor.
    • During registration periods, call early to make an appointment.
    • Prepare a preliminary schedule and several alternative schedules.
    • Pre-register for classes during the Four Bear registration time period.
    • Notify advisor of dropped and added courses, difficulty with getting classes, and changes in class schedule.
    • Be sure your advisor knows the status of your Writing Proficiency Assessment.
  • Remember! Math 002 and 005 credits do not count toward graduation nor toward the Four Bear credit requirements (these credits do count, however, toward full-time credits required by Financial Aid).
  • If you are unsure of major choice, visit Career Services, Lommasson Center 148, 243-2022.
  • Read the UM catalog, especially sections pertaining to your major, the General Education Requirements, and UM policies.
  • Keep track of your own academic progress. Take control and be responsible for your own academic career.
